My Heart – Poem

MY HEART

It worked its silent magic for many, many years.
It ran the races, played the games, and stood the test of fears.
It broke in love and loss and shared itself with friends.
It melted for the pets I had and strengthened for their end.
It did not seem to mind the food I really should not eat
But sought to keep me happy – go on – just a tiny piece.
I should have thought about it more often than I did
But it all seemed so irrelevant when there was life to live.
Then one day it was so tired it could no longer cope,
The pain of its exertion was a sign I just had hope.
But when I saw the ECG and echocardiogram,
I saw an amazing part of me that worked since life began.
It worked so hard for eighty years before it said it needed care.
My gratitude is to the medical staff for making me aware
Of my body and my life and knowing you are there.
We cannot exist without you, your knowledge and your care
We are so grateful to you all – – – –
God bless you everywhere.
